01 The brief

The architectural challenge

A long rooftop with a view on three sides and seating along the parapet. By day it worked; after sunset guests had nothing to gather around and the terrace emptied early.

02 The specification

A stainless fire bowl on a raised plinth inside a shallow reflecting pool, with the water spilling over one lip. River stones set on the pool floor to catch the light.

03 The installation

The pool was waterproofed and the pump housed out of sight below the plinth. The fire and the water were commissioned together and tested at night, in wind.

04 The result

The terrace now fills after sunset. The bowl is the first thing guests see from the stair.
